There are four basic tissues in humans and other animals: epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue and neural tissue. Depending on the species, the embryonic tissue (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm) from which they are derived sometimes differs. Epithelial tissue cells form thin sheets that cover the surface of the body and organs. In all animals, except that epithelial cells are mesoderm, most epithelial cells come from ectoderm and endoderm. Examples of epithelial tissue include the surface of the skin and the lining of the airways, genital and gastrointestinal tracts. There are several types of epithelium, including simple squamous epithelium, simple cubic epithelium, and columnar epithelium. Functions include protecting the organs, eliminating waste, absorbing water and nutrients, and secreting hormones and enzymes.
